Hindustan Unilever has changed the name of its ‘Health Food Drinks’ to ‘Functional Nutritional Drinks’ (FND). The change follows the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s directive to e-commerce sites directing them not to list such products under the ‘healthy drinks’ category. This effectively means that HUL brands like Horlicks and Boost will now fall into the new category.
Ritesh Tiwari, CFO of Hindustan Unilever, said, “We have changed the label of the category to FND, which is a better way to call it.”
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry had earlier advised e-commerce platforms not to classify Cadbury Bournvita and similar drinks as ‘health drinks’. This is because the Food Safety and Standards Act does not have a ‘health drinks’ category.
Earlier, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights had said that the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSS Act) 2006 does not define ‘health drinks’.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has asked e-commerce websites not to list dairy, grain or malt-based beverages under the ‘health drinks’ or ‘energy drinks’ categories as it is an unethical option to use. Wrong words, which can mislead customers.
“The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), a statutory body constituted under section (3) of the Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CPCR) Act, 2005, after its investigation under Section 14 of the CrPC Act 2005, concluded that no Ministry ‘Health drinks’ are defined under the FSS Act 2006, rules and regulations promulgated by FSSAI and Mondelez India Food Pvt Ltd, it said in a notification issued on April 10.
Hindustan Unilever to increase FND
Hindustan Unilever sees a big opportunity for growth in the FND category. According to Tiwari, the company plans to introduce better products to acquire more customers, increase product usage and encourage consumers to choose more advanced options.
The company has also seen that premium products, especially those related to diabetes and women’s health, are selling better.
