Bhilwara The festival of Holi, one of the major festivals of Hinduism, is celebrated with great enthusiasm and faith. This year, Holika Dahan will be celebrated on 13 March 2025 and the festival of Holi will be celebrated on 14 March. There is a tradition of planting Holi Danda about 1 month before Holika Dahan. While this tradition is disappearing in today’s modern era, in Bhilwara, which is the eighth largest city in Rajasthan, this tradition is still alive today and the people of Bhilwara are keeping it alive.

The tradition of planting Danda continues even today
In Bhilwara, the tradition of planting Holika on Holika Thana near Junavas Old Court in Bhilwara has been going on even today. While carrying out this tradition, the main Holi of Bhilwara city was planted on the full moon today with the chanting of the city Vyas Pandit Rajendra and Kamlesh Vyas. Along with this, Holi dandas were also planted with Vedic chanting in Sanganer and Katar village of Aasind near Bhilwara city.

What is Holi’s Danda
Pandit Kamlesh Vyas told Local 18 that the celebration of Holi is not limited to only one day happiness but its preparations start from a month in advance. An important part of these preparations is the tradition of planting Holi Danda, which is gradually disappearing in many places, especially in cities, but in Bhilwara it is still played with full devotion and enthusiasm.

Danda is a devotee Prahlad
Pandit Kamlesh Vyas told that according to mythological beliefs, this tradition is associated with the story of devotee Prahlad and his aunt Holika. Two dandas are planted in a prominent place of the village or locality, such as the square, intersection or temple complex, which are usually made from ‘bean plants’. Only these beans of plants are called Danda. At the time of Holika Dahan, Prahlad’s symbol dandas are saved from burning in the fire while the dandas with Holika symbols are allowed to burn. This incident reminds the legend in which Holika was consumed by burning in the fire, while Prahlad was safe by the grace of Lord Vishnu.

Holi Danda is fully decorated
Pandit Kamlesh Vyas told that after planting Danda, dung and wood made of cow dung are kept around it. These duties are called Bharbholiye. Large holes are made by giving them shape so that they dry well. When they are fully prepared, then their garland is made and offered in the fire of Holi. This ritual is not only a religious tradition but a symbol of community unity and cultural heritage that combines people together and promotes mutual interaction and brotherhood.

There is a special importance
Pandit Kamlesh Vyas told that Bharabholiye has a lot of importance in the custom of Holika Dahan. Special dung used in the tradition of Holi, which are condes made of cow dung and there is holes between them, it is called bharbholiye. A garland is made by putting a rope of moj in this hole. A garland contains seven bharbholis i.e. condes. In the religious ritual of Holika Dahan, Bharabholiye is offered to the fire at the time of Holika Dahan. Before setting fire to Holika, sisters eye their brothers with this garland. The bharbholiye is rotated seven times over the head of the brothers and thrown into the fire. It is believed that Bharabholis destroy evil forces and bring happiness and prosperity in the family.
