Holi 2025: The festival of colors is around the corner, and it is the time of the year when people live in celebration with color, water balloons, food and drinks. In an interview with HT lifestyle, Dr. Ajay Aggarwal, Senior Director – Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Noida said, “During Holi, outbreaks of contaminated water can cause fatal diseases if precautions are not taken up.”
Common waterborne infection during Holi:
Gastrointestinal infection: E in contaminated water. Bacteria such as coli and Salmonella cause diarrhea, vomiting and cramps.
Typhoid and hepatitis A: Gerit typhoid fever from unhealthy water source used during Holi celebrations, is responsible for spreading infections such as typhoid fever and hepatitis A, both affect the liver and digestive system.
Skin and eye infection: Water mixture with artificial colors can cause skin allergies, fungal infections and eye irritation, resulting in redness, itching, or even conjunctivitis.

Tips to prevent waterborne infection:
Use clean water: Always make sure that the water used during Holi is from a clean and safe source. Avoid using stable or untreated water.
Options for organic colors: Chemical-furious color, when mixed with water, can increase skin and eye infection. Choose natural, herbal or biological colors.
Avoid drinking contaminated water: To avoid consuming contaminated water from incredible sources, take your own bottled water.
personal hygiene: Take a bath after playing Holi to wash the remaining colors and potential pathogens. Antiseptic soap and clean water are recommended.

Avoid playing in heavy water pool: Do not play in a muded pool or water-elastic patch as the risk of infection increases here.
