Actor Hiram Kasten, best known for his work on TV shows such as Saved by the Bell, Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, has died at the age of 71, the New York Post reports.
According to a post on Facebook, the actor was battling prostate cancer. The post states that the actor died in the arms of his wife, Diana Kisiel Kastenbaum, “just hours after their 38th wedding anniversary.”
Kasten had been battling cancer as well as Crohn’s disease for the past seven years. He died at his home in Batavia, New York.
“Casten’s health had deteriorated since 2017 and he was no longer acting or actively pursuing his career,” the post reads, adding, “He began sharing this with his friends over the last six months.”
His “great sense of humor and artistic community supported him,” as “some traveled to Batavia to visit him, holding late-night Zoom meetings with friends on both coasts until the early hours of the morning.” His wife added, “This extended his life for at least two more months so he could laugh with his peers.”
Kasten’s best-known performance was as Michael on Seinfeld between 1993 and 1994.
The actor gained recognition in the comedy industry by performing regularly at the Comic Strip, a famous club that previously played house for Jerry Seinfeld. This helped him establish himself in the NYC comedy scene.
Diana wrote in the post that Seinfeld “passed Hiram in his first audition and he became a regular,” and the two “formed a friendship that has lasted for over 45 years.”
In addition to being a part of Seinfeld, Kasten also appeared in Saved by the Bell, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Cybill, Mad About You, and Everybody Loves Raymond.
In the early 2000s, Kasten appeared in Curb Your Enthusiasm, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, My Wife and Kids, and 7th Heaven.
The Bronx-born actor is survived by his wife Diana, daughter Millicent Jade, brother-in-law Kevin John Kisiel, reports New York Post.
