Iltija, daughter of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, has courted controversy by calling Hindutva a disease.
The PDP leader made the controversial remarks while reacting to a video in which three minor boys were allegedly forced to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and were thrashed by a man.
“Lord Ram should bow his head in shame and watch helplessly as minor Muslim boys are beaten with slippers just because they refuse to chant his name,” Iltija said in a post on X.
He further said that “Hindutva is a disease that has affected millions of Indians and has tarnished the name of God.”
However, after the uproar, Iltija claimed that her statement was deliberately distorted.
He said, “There is a lot of resentment over my tweets and the things I said about Islam. The senseless violence committed in the name of Islam was the first cause of Islamophobia. Today, Hinduism (not Hindutva) also finds itself in a similar situation, where it is being used and misused to kill and oppress minorities. Let’s call a spade a spade,” she said in another post.
Speaking to Mediaperson, he said that this is Mahatma Gandhi’s India and he has not spoken against Hinduism but against Hindutva. “I oppose Hindutva, which stems from Savarkar’s philosophy that India is only for Hindus. I know that Hinduism is a religion of peace and compassion. On the other hand, Hindutva is a disease that needs to be eradicated “
Meanwhile, speaking to PTI, Jammu and Kashmir BJP leader Ravinder Raina said that nowadays, videos about Hindus and Muslims are being circulated using AI, PDP leader retweeted a similar video and such Used language which is not acceptable. “There may be differences of opinion in politics, however, no one can hurt religious sentiments. They should apologise.”
BJP leader Agnimitra Paul said that Mehbooba Mufti and her daughter always speak against India.
“A few days ago, Mehbooba Mufti was comparing Gaza, Bangladesh with India. Her daughter, PDP leader Iltija Mufti, is now comparing Islam with Hinduism… How can she compare the two religions?. ..They have lost (Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections) and the Muslims of Kashmir have rejected them because they are spreading hatred,” Paul said.
