NEW YORK — Because of a shock hazard, a California company is recalling about 1 million power adapters sold with sound machines marketed to help babies and young children sleep.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission said the plastic surrounding the AC power adapter supplied with Hatch’s Rest first generation sound machines may come off when the product is removed from the outlet, leaving its prongs exposed. This increases the risk of electric shock.
In its recall notice issued Wednesday, the CPSC said it had received 19 reports of the plastic casing surrounding the adapter breaking, including two cases where consumers received minor electrical shocks.
Hatch said in a company announcement that the recall specifically applies to power adapters supplied by Jiangsu Chenyang Electron Co., Ltd, and added that it is no longer sourcing power adapters from Jiangsu Chenyang for its products.
Palo Alto, California-based Hatch also said the problem is only in the adapter that comes with the sleeping machines, not the device itself. “Once a replacement power adapter is released, it is safe to continue using the Hatch Rest 1st Generation device,” the company wrote.
In the meantime, consumers who have faulty power adapters are urged to stop using them. The now recalled adapters, which were manufactured in China, can be identified by their model number: CY05 050100U.
Between January 2019 and September 2022, the adapters were sold with Rest First Generation sound machines on hatch.co, as well as major retailers including Target and Walmart. Some were also sold on Amazon until May 2024. The machines produce white noise or lullabies to help babies and young children sleep, and also have features such as a night light.
It’s estimated that 919,400 of these were purchased in the U.S. and more than 44,000 in Canada. Hatch is offering free replacement adapters to affected customers and says it’s contacting all registered owners directly.
