Harsh Mayyar became a household name ever since the web show Gullak first released in 2019. Five years later and with its fourth season released recently, the actor feels “overwhelmed” that the audience is loving the show.
“Without any big promotions, Gullak has garnered a lot of love from the people and it has been loved by the audience and I am getting a very good response. This shows that everything is content based nowadays,” said Mayyar, who also made his singing debut with the track Feeling Nayi Hai in Gullak 4.
Sharing how singing is something he always wanted to do, he told us, “I had been pestering the team for a long time to say let’s do a song. Gullak is something that is my home ground. I thought the song was on me, so I might as well try it out with my voice. And when the song finally released, people loved it so much that it was unbelievable. I had never thought of such a foray into singing, I always thought maybe one day I would do playback singing for films. But, it all felt so good.”

Moving forward, the 26-year-old hopes to get more singing projects, and also wants to “try my hand at rap, as I have a lot of friends in the Desi hip hop industry”. However, at the moment, Mayyar, who won the National Award for Best Child Artist for I Am Kalam (2011), reveals that despite so many accolades, he hasn’t got opportunities immediately.
He said, “When I was young, I was not aware of all these things. But later, when I came to Mumbai, I realised it is a very different world and it would be difficult to experience it on your own,” adding, “I got my first big break after six years with Hichki (2018). [of waiting]and I couldn’t believe what happened. So, if I did not get the work earlier and I got it later, then I have no complaint. Without any film family background, at least people saw the talent in me and gave me work,” he elucidates.
Though the actor feels that social media can play an important role in a celebrity’s life, at the end of the day, it’s only good work that attracts more offers and audience. “I don’t indulge in internet fame, so it’s good that I still manage to get work. My aim is to focus only on acting and not bother about these factors,” he says, and quickly adds, “Initially, I didn’t pay much attention to social media, but after my marriage, my wife said you rap, sing, dance and act, so you should maintain your social media, that’s when I started paying a little attention to it. People are liking it now too! Still, one shouldn’t do anything excessive, it should just be a medium to stay connected with fans and make people talk more about your work,” concludes Mayar.
