Despite shouldering the huge responsibility of leading the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi still maintains a vibrant personality and makes time for meditation. In an old 40-minute meeting with the Prime Minister, social media influencer Ankit Baianpuria, known for starting a 75-day fitness challenge to inspire the youth, shared details about the PM’s routine. He said, “The Prime Minister told me that he is not able to eat food on time and has sleep issues. Then I told him that if the countrymen have to sleep comfortably, then someone has to work. Aur aap toh raja ho desh ke.” In celebration of his 74th birthday, we take a closer look at PM Modi’s fitness and wellness practices, including the inspiration behind his rigorous lifestyle.

3 hours of sleep

Union Minister L Murugan shared with ANI that PM Modi talked about his daily routine, revealing that he sleeps for only 3.5 hours at night and doesn’t eat anything after 6 pm. “Everyone was surprised and happy at the same time. PM Modi talked about his daily routine, his exercise, his foreign trips, when he visited Karachi. We got a chance to spend 45 minutes with him. We learnt a lot of inspiring things from him. He said that he sleeps for 3.5 hours and doesn’t eat anything after 6 pm,” he said talking about the time when the PM joined MPs for lunch in February.

Making fitness a priority

Despite a hectic schedule that begins at 4 a.m. and often goes on till midnight, Prime Minister Modi gives priority to his health and fitness. Narendra Modi is a game changerWhen the Prime Minister was the Chief Minister in Gandhinagar, his mornings used to start with a walk, a habit he follows even today before beginning his busy day. However, his commitment to yoga, Surya Namaskar and meditation keeps him energised and focused.

Simple but nutritious diet

The Prime Minister’s diet is simple but nutritious, his routine includes ginger tea and a light breakfast of boiled or roasted foods. Although he likes to snack between meals, he eats in moderation, preferring dishes like khichdi, kadhi, upma and khakhra prepared by his personal chef. His approach to fitness and nutrition reflects a balance between traditional practices and a disciplined lifestyle.

following a strict routine

PM Modi has often expressed his admiration for Benjamin Franklin, and urged UP ministers to prioritise ‘kaya’ (work) over ‘kaarya’ (programs). The founding father’s disciplined routine is the model for Modi’s ideal work-life balance, who begins his day at 5am with the question, “What good thing do I do today?” Franklin’s mornings included time for self-care, planning and breakfast, followed by focused work hours. He included breaks for reading, eating and contemplation, and his evenings were reserved for relaxation, conversation or music. By 10pm, it was time for bed.

Prime Minister Modi’s praise of Franklin’s routine, particularly her focus on managing sleep, diet and productivity, reveals her commitment to personal discipline. In the 2015 edition Mann ki Baat In conversation with former President Obama, Modi also spoke about how Franklin’s biography inspired him from a young age, teaching valuable lessons about minimising excessive sleep, controlling diet and managing work pressure – key elements to maintaining a healthy and balanced life despite the demands of leadership.

Prime Minister Modi’s commitment to health and fitness is a testament to the power of discipline, even in the most demanding roles. On his birthday, his example is a source of inspiration not just for Indian citizens but for leaders around the world.
