On 3 February, a telethon was organized as a special event of the campaign, in which megastar of the century Shri Amitabh Bachchan took the message of road safety to every corner of the country. Extending his support to the issue of road safety for the second consecutive year, he also explained the importance of the key aspects of the Road Safety Campaign 2024 i.e. ‘Respect’, ‘Restraint’, ‘Suraksha’, and ‘Cooperation’.
Famous writer and social worker Mrs. Sudha Murthy also participated in the telethon. He stressed the importance of teaching children traffic rules and basic road etiquette from an early age. Also, Sudha Murthy said that “Young minds are like clay, they will mold as they are molded”. Along with this, he said that children and youth learn from us “by taking you as an example” and parents and teachers are the first role models of children. Therefore, we all have to change our mindset and cooperate keeping in mind the safety of everyone on the road. Mrs. Murthy emphasized that we can become an example for others only if we ourselves follow the safety rules.
Piyush Tiwari, Founder, Save Life Foundation, joins Justice Indu Malhotra to explain why it is important to make the public aware of the Good Samaritan Law and how effective its implementation has been. Justice Indu Malhotra also explained in detail about the nuances of the law and how both the common people and witnesses of road accidents are given protection under this law. Emphasizing the need to encourage more and more people to come forward to help an accident victim, Shri Piyush Tiwari talked about the ‘3 C’s’ that a good person can do in the first hour of a road accident – It is important to be completed within what is called the ‘Golden Hour’. The 3 C’s include ‘check the condition of the victim’, ‘call the authorities for help’ and ‘take care of the victim as much as possible’.
During the important discussion on road safety, biking groups from across the country were also included, with whom roads, driving, and safety equipment were also discussed. Also, the importance of helmets in keeping the roads safe was also highlighted and it was also pointed out that most of the deaths on two-wheelers are of those who do not wear helmets. Actor and bike riding enthusiast R. Madhavan explained how one cannot predict ‘how another person on the road will behave or react’, so everyone has to take care of their own safety. R. Madhavan stressed the importance of wearing a helmet, citing the mandatory rule of the 2019 Motor Vehicles Act, which states that ‘every person above 4 years of age must wear a helmet while traveling on a two-wheeler.’ Other aspects of helmets were also discussed in the discussion, including the legal standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards that helmet manufacturing companies have to follow and how helmets should be taken care of.
In the final phase of the telethon, the Road Safety Anthem was presented to the nation along with a musical presentation by singer Shankar Mahadevan and lyricist Prasoon Joshi. Road safety was beautifully woven into the tune of this anthem. With his song ‘Parvaah Karenge’, he brought the important aspect of road safety i.e. sensitivity to every citizen. Taking this anthem as a whole, the mission of the Road Safety Campaign 2024 telethon is to teach the importance of empathy to all citizens of India. Also, the aim of this campaign is to make people aware about the law and to increase the sense of duty and responsibility among the people towards the lives of others. We all have to come together to make our roads safe and understand the importance of life.
