New Delhi. Cases of fraud through SMS are constantly coming to light in the country. The government has cracked down on fraud through SMS and has blacklisted 8 principal entities behind the SMS headers used in sending more than 10 thousand fraud messages in the last 3 months.
According to an official statement, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs, has taken this decisive action against 8 entities to protect citizens from potential SMS scams through the ‘Sanchar Saathi’ initiative.
Action on those who send fake SMS
The ‘Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center’ (I4C), operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, provided information about the misuse of 8 SMS headers to send fraudulent messages with the intent of cybercrime. It was found that more than 10,000 fraudulent messages were sent using these 8 headers in the last 3 months. The principal entities owning these 8 SMS headers have been blacklisted. According to the statement, along with the 8 principal entities, 73 SMS headers and 1,522 SMS content templates owned by them have also been blacklisted. Now none of these principal entities, SMS headers or templates can be used to send SMS.
Use of mobile numbers for telemarketing activities is not permitted
By blacklisting these organizations, the Department of Telecommunications has prevented possible harassment of citizens and reiterated its commitment to protect citizens against cyber crime. Along with this, the department warned that the use of mobile numbers for telemarketing activities is not allowed. If a consumer uses his telephone connection to send promotional messages, his connection will be disconnected on the first complaint and his name and address can be blacklisted for a period of 2 years.
