The Ministry of External Affairs (Mea) has received several complaints from Indian students and their families, which are about the difficulties in acquiring American student visa appointments, which the government said on Thursday after the announcement by US officials of expanded screening and veating for visa applicants.
In the written reply to a query in the Rajya Sabha, Foreign Minister Kirti Vidhan Singh mentioned that Mea addressed the issue with both the US Embassy in New Delhi and the US State Department, PTI said.
The Ministry was questioned about the awareness of the government about the challenges faced by potential Indian students in obtaining American student visas.
“On 18 June 2025, the US State Department (DOS) released a press release, titled ‘Visa expanded screening and veating for applicants’.
Under the new guidelines, the US will operate a comprehensive vet, including F, M and J non-migrant classifications to review the online appearance of all students and exchange visitor applicants.
To facilitate this process, all applicants for F, M, and J non-migrant visas will need to “public” their social media profiles according to guidelines.
Singh said Singh said, “After these developments, the Ministry of External Affairs has received several representation in difficulty in getting student visa appointments from Indian students and their families. The ministry raised the matter with the US State Department along with the US Embassy in New Delhi.”
Although issuing visas is a sovereign adjective of the state concerned, the MEA has “picked up” with the US Embassy in New Delhi and the US State Department in Washington, which is due to problems faced by potential Indian students in obtaining American visas, he further said.
Singh said, “The Government of India is engaged to promote mutually profitable and safe mobility structure with the US government, which allows to streamline methods for legal dynamics of students and professionals, and facilitates short -term tourist and business travel,” Singh said.
