According to Space.com, a supermoon appears when the full moon phase coincides with the moon’s closest approach to Earth in its orbit. The minimum distance between Earth and the moon along with the full moon phase makes this celestial event special. However, it is difficult to spot the difference with the naked eye.
When will the next supermoon be visible?
The next supermoon will appear on August 19. Skygazers can catch the best view of the moon that night at 2:26 am ET, which is equivalent to 11:56 pm in India. The other three supermoons will appear on September 18, October 17 and November 15.
The last supermoon occurred on August 20, 2023. The term supermoon has been used to describe the astronomical phenomenon over the past few decades. However, the term became popular among people, especially on social media, when three supermoons appeared four times in a row. The supermoon that appeared in November 2016 is considered to be the closest supermoon in 69 years.
