In an important step towards changing school education, India is set to introduce Western Australian Certificate education (WACE) in 100 schools.

In a major step for India’s school education system, Western Australian Education (WACE) – Senior Secondary Course from the Government of Western Australia – will be introduced in 100 schools across India over the next three years. Already running in countries like Singapore, China, Japan and Malaysia, Wes is now ready to become the first international school board supported by a foreign government to officially launch in India. After this Union of Indian Universities (AIU), WACE is equal to Indian school boards.

This recognition ensures the equivalence of WACE along with the certificate of the Indian Senior Secondary School, which provides access to both national and global higher education routes.

Each student enrolled in the WACE program will be assigned a unique identity number by the School Course and Standards Authority (SCSA) – the statutory body will be overseen. All certificates will be released directly by the Government of Western Australia ensuring authenticity and global recognition.

The WACE program provides a comprehensive K -12 education route, which extends from childhood education to senior secondary level.

Currently, international boards such as the International Bachakorite (IB), Cambridge International Examination (CIE), and French Baikaloriet (FB) operate in India, which provide courses and examination services.

To attain deep insights into the vision, implementation strategy and impact of this milestone initiative, AyraNews24x7 spoke with Angelic Smith, chief advisor to the Western Australia government, school courses and standard authority (SCSA).

Here are edited excerpts of the interview:

Q. As WACE enters the Indian education sector, how do you imagine your role within the developed school education scenario in the country?
Angelic Smith: As Ves enters India, its vision is to act as a supplementary partner in furthering the developed education scenario of the country. In alignment with NEP 2020, WACE aims to provide a global benchmark, government -backed courses that promote important thinking, creativity and practical skills. By collaborating with Indian schools, government bodies and regional stakeholders, WACE aspires to support the spontaneous integration of its curriculum, addressing students to international standards, providing access to local educational requirements. The purpose of this strategic partnership is to strengthen the quality and global relevance of Indian education, preparing students for higher education and career in a competitive global economy.

Q. As the first government -recognized international school course to enter India, how does WACE separate itself from the existing global course?
Angelic Smith: WACE is unique as the first government recognized international course in India, administered by the Government of Western Australia’s Legislative Bodies, School Courses and Standards Authority (SCSA). Its recognition by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) ensures a smooth route for students in Indian higher education institutions. With more than 36 years of imparting quality education, WACE connects global educational rigidity with strong quality assurance inherent in public accountability. Its mixture of internationally benchmark standards and local recognition facilitates both national and international educational progress to Indian students, making it a reliable and future prepared option.

Q. Can you expand on how to support merit-based, inquired and student-centric education as mentioned in WACE NEP?
Angelic Smith: The course of WACE focuses on developing significant thinking, problems and practical skills, emphasizing qualification-based, inquired education with NEP 2020. It encourages experienced learning through project-based assessment, real-world applications and interactive class strategies that promote curiosity and student engagement. Methods of evaluation include practical projects, presentations, and moderate grading, reducing rut learning and promoting a overall understanding of concepts. Such approaches empower Indian students to become an active partner in their education, aligning with the NEP’s goal of promoting students-centric educational environment.

Q. Will habitat to ensure relevant relevance for Indian students and teachers will include Indian cultural, linguistic and historical approach within its curriculum?
Angelic Smith: Yes, WACE recognizes the importance of maintaining cultural and relevant relevance. Schools that implement WACE in India will continue to teach Indian history, languages ​​and region-specific materials. The course will be flexible enough to include local stories, traditions and languages, allowing more meaningful and attractive learning for students of diverse background. While maintaining its internationally benchmark academic approach, the purpose of WACE is to mix Indian cultural elements originally, which supports the vision of NEP 2020 to integrate tradition with modernity in education.

Q. WACE How does it plan to equip Indian teachers to provide WACE courses with essential training and educational equipment?
Angelic Smith: WACE will provide comprehensive business development programs to suit the needs of Indian teachers. This includes ongoing access to resources such as structured in-traineing programs, course mentoring, and teaching guides, evaluation equipment and digital platforms. These programs will focus on the students-centered, inquiry-based teaching method formed with WACE standards. To ensure scalability and relevance, WACE will also cooperate with local teacher training institutes and take advantage of the government’s initiative to empower teachers in areas, promote confidence and ability to give a dynamic, inquiry-operated courses.

Q. International curriculum is often seen as expensive and exclusive. WACE How does a plan to remain accessible and justified in various socio-economic backgrounds in India?
Angelic Smith: WACE, being a government-backed courses, is to be more accessible than private, fees-based international options. Its strategy includes partnership with various types of schools, aided by the government and inexpensive private institutions to expand its access. Modular implementation options, scalable teachers training, and support programs will help reduce admission barriers. The goal is to democratization of access to global education, which makes students benefit from world-class learning opportunities without leaving India separately.

Q. How many schools are you going on a ship? What is a roadmap?
Angelic Smith: Vas India aims to join 100 schools in the next three years. By connecting with a diverse group of schools, from metro-based international institutions to progressive schools in Tier 2 and 3 cities, we want to build a strong, a strong learning ecosystem that align with global standards and national education goals.
