The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has submitted its report identifying the reasons for its poor performance in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha elections 2024. In a 15-page internal report, the saffron party has listed comments of party leaders on constitutional amendments and the issue of leaked papers in competitive exams as the major reasons for its defeat in Uttar Pradesh.
Out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP could win only 33 seats, down from the 62 it won in 2019. The party’s vote share dropped from 49.98 per cent in 2019 to 41.37 per cent in 2024.
In its review, the party considered all seats except Varanasi and Lucknow, where it won but the margin of victory was less than in the 2019 general elections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi captured the Varanasi seat for the third time, while Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh again won the Lucknow seat. However, the margin of victory in both seats was less than in 2019.
The BJP won 240 seats across the country in the Lok Sabha elections 2024, the results of which were declared on June 4. As this number was 32 short of the majority figure of 272 seats in the Lok Sabha, the BJP had to rely on its allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to form its government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a record third term.
The party had appointed senior leaders in Uttar Pradesh for the review process. These leaders have been asked to visit each assembly constituency of the Lok Sabha seat assigned to them. The report of each leader was submitted to the UP leadership by June 25.
