UPSC exam is considered to be one of the toughest exams not only in India but globally. Successfully clearing this exam can lead to prestigious government jobs like IAS, IPS, IFS or IRS. IAS officer Dheeraj Kumar Singh is among the few candidates who cleared the UPSC exam in his first attempt.
After completing his MBBS and MD degrees, he started preparing for the Civil Services Examination, even turning down high-paying jobs with monthly salaries in lakhs for the opportunity.
Singh was a brilliant student who received his early education in Hindi medium. After excelling in his 12th class board exams, he obtained his MBBS degree from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and later completed his MD degree from the same institute.
Singh is a resident of Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. His mother lived in the village while his father worked in another city. Due to his mother’s ill health, he had to return to his village midway. Despite requesting the authorities to transfer his father to his hometown, no one listened. Due to this he decided to join civil services.
Singh’s family faced financial struggles. When he told his family about his decision to appear for the UPSC exam, everyone opposed him. However, he remained determined. He even turned down a job offer of Rs 5 lakh per month to pursue a career in civil services.
Dheeraj Kumar Singh had promised himself that he would give himself only one chance in the UPSC exam. He was determined to concentrate on his medical career if he failed in his first attempt. His hard work paid off and he became an IAS officer by securing 64th rank in the 2019 UPSC CSE exam.
He scored 853 marks in main examination and 154 marks in interview round. Overall he scored 1007 marks. Presently, Singh is serving as Joint Secretary to the Government, Department of Personnel (A-1), Rajasthan, Jaipur.
