The ‘Garoa Floresta’ hotel is part of the Garroa Group, which has 22 other smaller hotels in Porto Alegre. There was a fire in another hotel in 2022 in which one person died and 11 others were injured. Porto Alegre Mayor Sebastião Mello said at a press conference that his administration had signed an agreement with the company in 2020 to use 400 of its rooms to shelter homeless people.
Mello said that now this contract will be reviewed and 22 units of the hotel will be inspected. The hotel where the fire broke out on Friday, near Porto Alegre City Hall, had a contract for 16 rooms. Local officials said that of the 11 people rescued from the fire, eight are still hospitalized, two of whom are in serious condition but their lives are not in danger.
