In an emerging scam in Bihar’s education system, officials are raising concerns over the possible reinstatement of fake teachers, putting the jobs of around 24,000 teachers at risk. This situation follows the counseling session held recently for 1.87 lakh candidates who qualified the qualifying examination, during which significant discrepancies came to light regarding the authenticity of teaching certificates.
Counseling was conducted for a large number of teachers between December 1 and 13 last year; However, about 42,000 were left without consultation, while more than 3,000 failed to appear. Notably, biometric verification of more than 10,000 of these individuals was not completed. The education department promised that those who missed their chance will get another opportunity after the Chhath festival this year.
Concerns grew as several certificates were flagged as potentially fraudulent during ongoing verification processes. After initial counseling of successful candidates, it was revealed that doubt arose on several marksheets, following which the Education Department sent these documents to the respective universities for further examination.
Reports indicate that around 4,000 teachers with fake certificates have been detected in earlier investigations. What is worrying is that about 80% of these individuals scored below the required 60% limit in their mark sheets, while 20% found various certificates related to disability, caste, residence and sports to be fake.
The Department of Education confirmed that disciplinary action is imminent for 24,000 teachers identified as having multiple dubious certificates. Apart from termination, the government is planning to recover the salary paid to these individuals during their tenure. Further investigation will be conducted, and if no valid documents are found, the stranded teachers may face legal consequences.
While the Education Department reports that only 96 marksheets of those who attended the counseling have been confirmed to be fake, the situation remains tense. Many teachers who did not participate in the counseling session are now under investigation, with plans to examine their credentials also.
Director of Secondary Education, Yogendra Singh, highlighted that more than 40,000 teachers were unable to attend their counseling sessions. The department is preparing to address these candidates in November, especially in view of the many suspicious marksheets identified during the process.
To prevent such issues in future, the education department is planning to implement a digital service book for all teachers. The initiative will involve intensive verification of teachers’ credentials using biometric authentication – including mark sheets, identity and residential information. Once installed, this system will allow real-time inspection and facilitate better monitoring of teachers’ records, thereby ensuring that fraudulent activities in the education sector of Bihar are significantly reduced.
