Narcissism refers to a personality trait where a person thinks very highly of themselves, often at the expense of looking down on others. They feel that they are superior to others and need constant attention. The way they see themselves can also lead to oppression of the people around them. Narcissistic abuse often starts at home when we are raised by parents who are narcissistic and continue to belittle us and suppress our emotions. Emotionally immature parents may abuse us, causing childhood trauma. Bullying – often associated with educational institutions and peers – can also start at home. Even though bullying is known as a moral problem, it is much more than that, and can have serious long-term effects.
“You may have experienced persistent criticism, insults, and belittling comments about your character, appearance, or abilities. You may have felt controlled by guilt, shame, or fear, as well as threats to withhold love or approval if you did not comply. may also have met their demands,” wrote psychologist Caroline Middlesdorf.
Effects of bullying and narcissistic abuse:
brain damage: The parts of the brain responsible for social interaction, thinking, and addressing emotions suffer severe damage due to abuse. We are not capable of understanding and thinking straight.
social cue illusion: Someone who is experiencing bullying and abuse may begin to see everything as a threat, often misinterpreting social cues and responding incorrectly.
trouble thinking: The thinking gears of the brain get jammed because of the way we are treated. Therefore, we are not able to think straight and face difficulties in solving even small problems.
emotional rollercoaster: We face an emotional rollercoaster – constantly feeling overwhelmed or bursting into tears. This happens when chronic exposure to abuse damages the parts of the brain responsible for emotions.
brain stopped: Natural processes get disrupted. The formation of new brain cells and the development of new connections stops.
