Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday inaugurated major infrastructure projects at the National Institute of Technology Rourkela, marking an important milestone in the development of the institute. The event also included the laying of the foundation stone of three major projects as well as the inauguration of an indoor sports complex and a 1,000-seat open-air theatre.
Major projects launched and inaugurated include the Civil Engineering Department building (Rs 91.18 crore), a new institute guest house (Rs 33.51 crore), and MCL Hall of Residence (500-capacity girls hostel, Rs 55.35 crore). The construction site of the permanent Kendriya Vidyalaya at NIT Rourkela was also inaugurated.
The newly inaugurated indoor sports complex, costing Rs 35 crore, is part of the Student Activities Center (SAC) and aims to enhance sports, fitness and student development. Built as per international standards, the complex includes a multipurpose hall with badminton, lawn tennis and volleyball courts, yoga, dance, music and drama halls, two squash courts, basketball and badminton courts and various recreational facilities.
A 1,000-seat open-air theatre, built at a cost of Rs 6 crore, is a major feature of the sports complex, which aims to host state and national level sporting and cultural events.
Pradhan expressed his appreciation for the progress of NIT Rourkela in education, research and innovation, and emphasized the role of the Sports Complex in promoting excellence of students in sports and cultural activities.
“It is heartening to see the remarkable progress of NIT Rourkela in advancing education, research and innovation. The sports complex inaugurated today will help students reach new heights not only in sports, but also in the creative and cultural fields. The institute is playing a leading role in promoting technological development in Odisha and contributing to the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi of Developed India @ 2047. NIT Rourkela will provide future job creators through incubating startups. With its innovative research addressing critical challenges such as sustainable development and climate change, I am confident that the Institute will play a decisive role in shaping India’s economic and industrial future.
Director of NIT Rourkela, Prof. Of. Umamaheswara Rao welcomed the dignitaries and emphasized the Institute’s commitment to excellence in education, research and innovation. He mentioned the impressive ranking of NIT Rourkela in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 and the initiation of new infrastructure projects to create a world-class, student-centric ecosystem.
Dean of Planning and Development Prof. Pradeep Sarkar discussed upcoming infrastructure projects worth over Rs 800 crore, which include an academic building, residential facilities, a Kendriya Vidyalaya and a sewage treatment plant in Bhubaneswar, aimed at raising the standards of NIT Rourkela.
