Union Education Budget 2025 Live Update: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitarman presented Budget for 2025-26 A day before the budget on 1 February, the government released the Economic Survey 2024-25 in Parliament. The survey stated that India’s schooling system serves 24.8 crore students in 14.72 lakh schools, with 98 lakh teachers (Udise+ 2023-24). Government schools make 69% of the total, all students enroll in half of the students and 51% of teachers.
Private schools have 22.5% of the total, 32.6% students were enrolled and 38% teachers were appointed. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims to obtain a 100% gross enrollment ratio (GER) by 2030. Currently, GER is almost universal at primary level (93%), while efforts are being made to improve enrollment at secondary (77.4.4) (77.4.4.4.4 (77.4.4)%) and Higher Secondary (56.2%) level.
For 2024-25, the government had allocated a record of Rs 1.20 lakh crore in the education sector, which was 6.84% increase from the previous year. Of this, Rs 73,008.10 crore was kept separate for school education and Rs 47,619.77 crore for higher education. The budget for school education saw a slight increase of 6.11%, of which Rs 4,200 crore was allocated to the PM Shri Yojana. Meanwhile, higher education increased by 7.4% in money compared to the previous year.
