The association between fish consumption during pregnancy and a lower risk of autism was seen more strongly in female children.
To reduce the risk of autism spectrum disorder in newborns, a recent study suggests that pregnant women should include a special food in their daily diet – that is fish. Eating fish while pregnant has shown positive results in keeping the risk of autism at bay. However, consuming fish oil supplements instead of natural foods has not shown as promising results.

The study was conducted by researchers at Drexel University’s A.J. Drexel Autism Institute. Dr. Emily O’Kane, co-author of the study and a professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, said the safety and benefits of fish consumption during pregnancy are abundant. It also helps reduce the risk of premature birth and improve cognitive development.
How much fish should one eat in a week?
The study recommended pregnant women consume 8 to 12 ounces (at least two to three servings) per week of seafood, which has low levels of mercury. It helps promote fetal brain development and keep the risk of autism at bay.

Research was conducted on 10,800 pregnant women for fish intake and 12,646 pregnant women for fish oil supplement intake. However, the researchers observed that a quarter of the study participants did not consume fish.
Omega-3 fatty acids and fish oil supplements are essential nutrients for the body. Omega-3 fatty acids help in proper functioning of organs. It also helps promote heart, brain and eye health. Omega-3 fatty acids can also be found in fish, walnuts, flax seeds and leafy vegetables or in fish oil supplements.

Consumption of fish reduces the risk of autism:
The study further observed that the association between fish consumption during pregnancy and lower risk of autism in female children is stronger. Consumption of omega-3 supplements during pregnancy was also not associated with autism-related treatments.
