Venus, known as Earth’s “evil twin”, once saw all the water disappear from its surface. Now, a new study has revealed how the gases – oxygen and carbon – are stripped away from the upper layers of the planet’s atmosphere.
According to a study published in nature astronomy Journal, the Mercury-bound BepiColombo spacecraft made its second flyby of Venus on August 10, 2021. The fleeting visit of the ESA/JAXA mission “provided a short-term observation of its induced magnetosphere”.
What did the study reveal?
According to a report Phys.orgThe “discovery in a previously unknown region of Venus’s magnetic atmosphere” suggests that carbon and oxygen are traveling so fast that “they may escape the planet’s gravitational pull”.
