Surya was accused of spreading fake news about the suicide of a farmer in Havari district, Karnataka.
The bench dismissed the state government’s appeal and warned against the politicization of legal proceedings.
The case arose from the post shared on 7 November 2024 to Surya, which mentioned the reports of the Kannada News Portals that a farmer Rudrapa Chanappa Balikai committed suicide after the Waqf Board seized his land by the Waqf Board.
The post was later removed when it was revealed that the claim was baseless.
