Institutes in India offer various categories and quotas to candidates, making the admission process easy and seamless for those who need it the most. Similarly, people suffering from certain disabilities have the right to admission in any course. Keeping this in mind, let’s know what a disability quota is, how it works and how to avail it.
According to the information given, reservation for disabled persons has been increased by four percent under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. This law applies to every prestigious institution in the country. The list given below gives information about the percentage of reservation given by the top institutions of India:
– IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology)- 4 percent
– NIT (National Institute of Technology)- 5 percent
– IIM (Indian Institute of Management)- 5 percent
– UPSC (Union Public Service Commission)- 4 percent
Even though 4 per cent of UPSC seats are reserved for people with disabilities, there have been cases where the authenticity of the candidate who opted for the quota was questioned. Therefore, to avail the PWD quota, the candidate must have a certificate that can be verified by the authorities. If a person is found to have at least 40 per cent disability, he or she is considered eligible for the UPSC PWD quota.
Types of disabilities considered for Divyaangjans:
As per the information, three types of disabilities are taken into consideration for this category:
-Blindness and low vision, for which 3 vacancies are available
-Deaf & Hearing Impaired, 9 vacancies available
-Motor disabilities, which includes conditions such as cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy. There are 8 vacancies available for this.
-If a candidate is suffering from multiple disabilities, he/she can get admission against 4 vacancies.
For admission to the mentioned institutes, differently-abled persons are allotted an additional one hour to complete the exam.
