Women and girls in Uganda’s Bundibugyo district are suffering from an outbreak of a mysterious virus, with patients experiencing high fever and uncontrollable body tremors, according to a report in Deccan Herald.
The disease, known locally as ‘Dinga Dinga’ (meaning ‘trembling like dancing’), has affected about 300 people in the district, mainly women and girls.
According to a report India TodayNo deaths have been reported so far, and the disease is currently being treated with antibiotics. District Health Officer Dr Kiyita Christopher said, “There is no scientific evidence that herbal medicine can treat this disease. We are using specific treatments, and patients usually recover within a week. I urge the local people to seek treatment from health facilities within the district.

However, no cases have been reported outside Bundibugyo. Although samples from affected individuals have been sent to the Ugandan Ministry of Health, no official diagnosis has yet been confirmed.
Not the first time?
The “Dancing Plague of 1518” was a series of uncontrollable dancing episodes in Strasbourg, Alsace, Holy Roman Empire, from July to September 1518.

The outbreak began when Frau Trofea started dancing uncontrollably in the streets without any music. Soon, others also joined in and the dance continued for several days, even when attempts were made to stop them. Unable to stop their erratic movements, the dancers moved from homes and streets to churches.
How healthy are women in Uganda?
According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, maternal mortality remains high in Uganda, at 440 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. Most maternal deaths are caused by: unsafe abortion, obstetric complications, such as severe bleeding, infection, hypertensive disorders and obstructed labour, and pregnancy-related conditions such as malaria, diabetes, hepatitis and anemia.
In 2021, healthy life expectancy for women in Uganda was 58.9 years, representing an improvement of 15.4 years from 2000.
