Did The Boys’ shock value take things too far in episode 6? Kripke’s approach could ruin your favorite childhood superhero memories

The Boys has relied heavily on visual shock value to draw maximum attention to the story. Somehow, some of the most disgusting parts of the show have often been associated with Hughie’s (Jack Quaid) storyline, and season 4 ramped up its disgust factor to such an extent that it once again dropped a heavy “dirty business” on the character, shutting down any supply of sympathy for him.

The Boys Season 4 Episode 6 "dirty business" It will arrive on Prime Video on July 4, 2024.

The Boys season 4 episode 6 dropped some heavy bombshells on July 4. Ultimately, though, it was Hughie’s part in this superhero universe’s billionaire Batman counterpart – going undercover as a super webweaver next to Tek Knight (Derek Wilson)’s Spider-Man – that brought forth a disturbing scenario that once again used heavy-handed, provocative scenes of sexual assault, but this time in a hypocritical way.

Hughie was still knee-deep in grief over his father’s (Simon Pegg) heartbreaking tragic end in the previous episode. And yet, episode 6 taught him the lesson of “never meeting your heroes” at the worst possible time, only to have the worst consequences of inadvertently walking into Tek Knight’s sex dungeon, which was ignored by the other characters as well as the show creators.

Fans react to The Boys season 4 episode 6

Netizens continued to express their emotional breakdown over the way Hughie had to face it, with some directly blaming the show for taking such an insensitive step. “Attacking a character in such a ‘funny’ way is disgusting. The Boys is not as progressive as it is made out to be.”

On the other hand, some fans tried to weigh in on the situation, claiming it was intentionally portrayed this way to portray a realistic viewpoint. “People, especially men, don’t want to talk about SA and it’s not uncommon for someone in this situation to ignore it. It’s not like they didn’t have a lot going on. It seems like Annie really should have approached the topic before the breakdown, but it happens,” someone else commented.

Eric Kripke calls what happened to Hughie in episode 6 “ridiculous”

Somehow, everything was making sense, until show creator Eric Kripke explained what Hughie’s position was in the matter.

Brushing off the “dark” aspects of his story, considering how Hughie was sexually abused by his childhood hero shortly after his father’s death, Kripke called the sex dungeon dealings “ridiculous”.

Moreover, what he said in a recent interview with Variety might instantly tarnish all your fond memories of your favourite superheroes from Marvel and DC.

Confirming that Tek Knight was his “version of Batman”, Kripke admitted that he “really wanted to play with that metaphor: the fascist premise of Batman as a very rich man who preys on poor people, and then profits from the imprisonment.”

“Tek Knight was already established as a crazy person, so we were already halfway there. Then this idea came up that, he should have a Batcave – but honestly, the Batcave would be a sex dungeon. Like, even the real Batcave is just on the edge of being a sex dungeon. It’s really dark, and there’s rubber suits everywhere. It’s not that loud to add some dildos and then a weird urinal that turns into a face mask.”

Next, talking about a subplot in the comics that involves Hughie going undercover as a superhero, Kripke said Quaid always asked him to do that. And somehow, even in this case, he learned another lesson the hard way, “always be careful what you ask the writers.”

“Then eventually we got this Webweaver character and the idea of Spider-Man tickling the hell out of the Batcave was just too good to pass up. I’m sorry, I couldn’t leave that on the table,” Kripke said.

When asked if Amazon ever tried to shut down any aspect of the episode for taking it “too far,” Kripke confirmed that it was “largely scripted.” He called out his “poor writers’ assistant” for “making a long list of real messes.”

In contrast, when Kripke and the team had to deal with the troubling translation of Starlight’s attack in the early seasons, there was an entirely different conversation about wanting to “get it right.” Glee wasn’t seen anywhere near that, Kripke said at the time. ,I have never worked so hard or stressed about a scene before or since in my life. Because if I got it wrong, it would not only fail as a scene, it would hurt. And I felt that pressure and responsibility the whole time.”

Some cast members perpetuated Kripke’s hypocritical “funny” approach by continuing to poke fun at the Hughie character in behind-the-scenes conversations.
