Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has proposed mass singing of Vande Mataram in classrooms to promote national unity and prosperity.
The Education Minister expressed his inspiration by collectively singing the national anthem with the students of Ramjas College.
Visiting Delhi University’s Ramjas College to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the national song, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday pitched for mass singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ in every class in DU. He described it as a powerful tradition that can grow into a mass movement and said that this practice will guide the development of a prosperous India.
Pradhan said, “Let our young friends sing the full version of Vande Mataram and become carriers of its spirit in Delhi University. The university will play a major role in converting the eternal spirit of Vande Mataram into a mass movement and connecting it with the future generations.”
He said, “Let the collective singing of Vande Mataram become a powerful tradition in every classroom of the university; only then will it grow into a mass movement. Then, we sang Vande Mataram for independence; today, Vande Mataram will serve as our guide in building a developed and prosperous India.”

The minister expressed his inspiration to sing the national anthem en masse with the students of Ramjas College, PTI reported.
He said, “After long struggles and sacrifices of countless national servants, we got independence in 1947; Vande Mataram was the clarion call of national consciousness that united the entire nation.”
It is believed that ‘Vande Mataram’ written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was written on Akshaya Navami, November 7, 1875. It was first published in the literary magazine Bangadarshan as part of his novel Anandamath, which was serialized and later published as a standalone book in 1882.
Controversy regarding Vande Mataram
The controversy began when Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed last week that important verses of the song were removed in 1937. PM Modi said that “a part of its spirit and significance was stripped away,” suggesting that the partition “sowed the seeds of the ultimate partition of India.”
On Friday, Congress demanded an apology from the Prime Minister for his remarks. Reacting to his comments, the Congress on Sunday alleged that the Prime Minister had “insulted” the 1937 Congress Working Committee (CWC), which had issued a statement on the national anthem.
In October 1937, the Indian National Congress decided to adopt only the first two verses of the song. These verses were officially recognized as the national anthem of India in 1950.
