According to airport sources, the new ATC tower is not only ready for flight operation, but will also start working today i.e. from Monday.
At the moment, the new and old ATC tower will work together. In the afternoon, there will be flight operations from the new ATC tower for two hours, the rest of the time will be flight operations from the old tower itself. This series will last for the next three months. If everything goes well during these three months, the old ATC tower will be recorded on the date of history and the new ATC tower will become the new date of Kolkata Airport. Along with the airlines, passengers will get the benefit of this changed date of Kolkata Airport.
Old terminal will remain in hot standby
According to airport sources, live tests in the new ATC tower will start from Monday afternoon. For this, the time of the day has been chosen when the air traffic is less. The controllers will work from the new tower between Monday to Friday from 2 pm to 4 pm. They will contact the flights coming and go to Kolkata and monitor landing and takeoff. During this time the old ATC will be on ‘Hot Standby’. That is, if needed, he will immediately handle the work.
The new tower may be modern, but the old system of 2012 will be used in it. Sources in the Airports Authority of India (AAI) say that it may take 18 to 24 months to choose, buy and start a new system. Instead of waiting so long, AAI has decided to start the tower with the adviser version of the old system. In these two hours of the afternoon, there are about 40 flights at Kolkata Airport. During this time, 8 controller will be on duty in the new tower.
The new ATC is about 75 feet high than the old tower
Along with this, the technicians of the communication, navigation and surveillance team will also be present to monitor the operation, so that the system works properly. It is worth mentioning that the new ATC tower is about 187 feet high, which is about 75 feet high than the old tower. The height of the old ATC is about 112 feet. Instead of working in the new tower, it will be 2,475 sq ft, while in the old tower it was just 1,260 sq ft, which was quite small. In February last year, the construction of the tower and the power and optic fiber cable work was completed.
According to airport sources, the security of the existing ATC tower is responsible for the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The security of the new ATC tower is divided into two parts. Under the new system, the security of the technical block will be with the private agency, while the security of other parts will be under the supervision of CISF.
