Love, loneliness, longing and everything in between were depicted effortlessly by a maverick Indian filmmaker-actor: Guru Dutt. He was only 39 years old when he died in 1964. Born on 9 July 1925 in Karnataka, this is his birth centenary year. And one of the many tributes being showered on him is the dantangoi display Daastan-e-Guru Dutt,

The show to be held in the city today will be staged by Fauzia Dastango. “I am not a film historian, so I wanted to present this story with authenticity and respect,” Fauzia shares, “What inspired me to conceptualize the Dastangoi showcase on Guru Dutt was a deep sense of admiration and a bit of pain for a man who gave so much to Indian cinema, yet never got his due in his lifetime. This year marks his birth centenary, and I want to tell this story. Can’t think of a better moment to revisit. the man who gave us Pyaasa (1957) and paper flowers (1959).”
With songs sung by singer Latika Jain and script written by Abbas Qamar, this dastangoi is well-researched by Asha Batra. Fauzia says, “For me, this is not just a tribute. It is a way of giving voice to a man who once spoke for all the unheard souls of cinema. So, I reached out to Asha, who works in film documentation and preservation. Her insights grounded the idea in solid research and sensitivity.”
Their combined passion and vision brought this story to life. Vikas Jalan, presenter of the show, says, “Guru Dutt was an enigma who has been very close to my heart. I used to love watching his films alone and listening to his music, where every song, every word had such a deep meaning… So we came up with this Dastangoi because we wanted to inspire and introduce the new generation to the life and times of this unique talent.”
