A Class 3 student died and two others were injured after a wall partially collapsed at a government residential school in Odisha’s Koraput district, police said on Thursday. The incident took place at Gandhi Nagar Ashram (for SC and ST students) in Kotpada on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as eight-year-old Premanand Bhatra. According to PTI, the injured students were initially treated in Kotpadh and later referred to the district headquarters hospital in Jeypore.
One of the injured students was discharged after initial treatment and returned to the hostel. District Welfare Officer Sunil Kumar Tandi said the other suffered leg injuries and is still undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital.
“One of the injured students has been discharged after initial treatment and has returned to the hostel, while the other, who sustained leg injuries, is undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital,” Tandi said.
Officials said that the incident took place in the hostel premises. The four-foot high wall containing the inauguration plaque suddenly collapsed, reports said.
Describing the incident as unfortunate, Tandi said an investigation committee has been set up under the chairmanship of Jeypore sub-collector. This committee will conduct a thorough investigation and submit its findings to the District Collector for necessary action.

Earlier in July, a similar incident had happened in Rajasthan when at least seven children died when the roof of a primary school collapsed on the morning of July 25. The roof of Piplodi Primary School in Jhalawar collapsed, trapping more than 60 children under the debris. Five teachers of the school were suspended. The structure had four classrooms, including the one that collapsed, and was constructed by the gram panchayat in 1994, PTI reported.
