In an interview with HT Digital, Dr. Amit P Ghawade, Consultant- Pediatrician and Neonatologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Kharghar, Mumbai, says that it is not just the high calories in these foods that are posing a threat, but the high levels of sugar found in processed foods. “Consuming junk food can lead to obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, kidney and liver problems, heart disease, and even the onset of some types of cancer later in life. The accessibility and affordability of junk food makes it difficult for many people. It makes it a convenient option for individuals struggling with time constraints or financial limitations,” says Dr. Ghawade.

Junk food that contains too little fiber and too much sugar and salt can impair gut health and in turn affect immune function. It may also impact brain development and contribute to behavioral problems in young children and teens. Excessive consumption of these foods is increasing depression, anxiety, aggression.

“What’s more, a diet rich in processed foods, sugar and unhealthy fats can disrupt the balance of good bacteria in the gut, which can lead to digestive problems and a weakened immune system. Research shows that a diet rich in junk food can increase the risk of mental health disorders like depression and anxiety in children.
