Many students have expressed concern over the absence of additional subject examination options in private candidates of Central Secondary Education (CBSE) for 2026. The board issued a notice on September 8, 2025, which invites applications from Class X and XII private candidates for upcoming examinations. While the notice gives the eligibility to categories and deadline, students say that it does not provide an option to add an additional subject – an option available in previous years.
For many students, especially science stream people who studied physics, chemistry and biology in class XII, but not mathematics, additional subject provision served as a path to qualify for engineering and technology courses. Others used it to switch the currents of the career or clean the subject marked under the repeat theory (RT).
A student passed in 2024 reported that the first CBSE had allowed three efforts to clean the RT through the additional subject route. The student wrote, “This year, without any notice, this option is missing. For those of us who planned to re -reveal with mathematics, it has closed the only door with us,” the student wrote.
After taking the drop year, another aspiration, who prepared for JEE, said: “We studied mathematics outside the school with an understanding that we can appear as private candidates. Suddenly that option is gone, and now we can lose completely eligibility.”
Some students also described the psychological effects of change. A message said, “I feel very dearly. This sudden change has put our future at stake.” Another said: “This option helped students change the career path. It is extremely inappropriate to scrap it without an option.”
The main questions of the students are:
Why the additional subject option seems to be closed without prior notice,
What option, if any, are available to those who trusted it, and
Does CBSE intend to reconsider the provision of 2026.
It is important to note that the September 8 notification of CBSE does not clearly mention that the additional subject examination facility has been removed. This concern stems from the fact that this year online application portal for private candidates does not show this option, according to students.
HT Digital demanded CBSE response to the concerns raised by the students, but did not get the response until the time of publication.
For now, uncertainty continues for students who planned their higher education around the availability of this route. Their appeal is to provide clarity for the board as soon as possible, so they can plan their next steps without losing an important academic year.
