From busy mornings to late night deadlines, we tend to overlook minor inconveniences as stress, fatigue or simply another long day creeping up on us. But sometimes, those ‘normal’ sensations are your heart’s initial cry for attention. What is worrying is how easily these subtle clues can be mistaken for harmless issues.

Dr. Jack Wolfson, a cardiologist from Arizona in the US who has over 16 years of experience, shared 5 unusual symptoms of a heart attack that need more attention than they should, in his November 28 Instagram post. “Everyone knows the classic symptoms of a heart attack… but I want to tell you about five symptoms you’ve never heard of that could save your life,” Dr. Jack wrote in the caption. Let’s take a look at their recommendations:

1. Skin related problems

Your skin may appear internally swollen. “Dry, itchy, flaky skin, unexplained rashes, eczema, these are all signs that something is burning inside,” Dr. Wolfson said. He said inflammation and oxidative stress can increase the risk of heart attack.

2. Frequent headaches

“Headaches are not normal,” he says, adding that they can indicate blood vessel problems or poor nitric oxide levels, both of which indicate the system is under stress. That said, persistent headaches should not be ignored.

3. Stomach problems

Digestive problems like constipation, bloating, nausea or stomach pain can also be warning signs. He said, “There is a deep connection between the heart and the intestine. Never ignore these digestive problems.”

4. Vague pain

Dr. Wolfson emphasized that widespread aches and pains may reflect underlying inflammation. “Any kind of pain anywhere … is linked to inflammation, which is linked to heart attacks and strokes,” he said. He warned that pain in the back, shoulder or between the shoulder blades can sometimes be accompanied by a heart attack.

5. Poor sleep

Disrupted sleep, frequent awakenings at night, or chronic insomnia may also be signs of trouble. “If you have sleep problems … these things are associated with an increased risk of heart attack,” he said.

He finished with a reminder: “Your body whispers in pain before it screams.”
