Ahead of the BMC elections, the reunion of once-estranged cousins Raj and Uddhav Thackeray has drawn widespread criticism from the opposition. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday alleged that Thackeray’s cousins have come together only for power and lack any kind of program for the development of Mumbai.
Responding to Raj Thackeray’s remarks, Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde said, “People who can’t even take care of their own children, how will they handle Mumbai or Maharashtra?”
Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray announced the alliance of their parties ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections to be held on January 15.
Eknath Shinde took a dig at Thackeray’s reunion.
Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Eknath Shinde alleged that the only goal of Raj and Uddhav Thackeray is to gain power.
Shinde said, “They have no development agenda, their aim is only to gain power. These people drove Marathi speakers out of Mumbai. The assembly elections and the recent local elections have shown which is the fake and which is the real Shiv Sena.”
“Those who deviated from the ideology of (late Shiv Sena founder) Balasaheb Thackeray have been taught a lesson in the assembly elections last year and the recent city council and nagar panchayat elections,” he said.
The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance won 207 posts in the local body elections. The Maharashtra State Election Commission conducted elections for 288 urban local bodies – 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats – across all six administrative divisions in two phases of polling on December 2 and December 20.
How did Devendra Fadnavis react?
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis alleged that the cousins were propagating as if Russia and Ukraine, which were locked in conflict for nearly four years, ‘have finally come together.’ He claimed that both the parties are facing an existential crisis, and have repeatedly changed their roles and have earned the distrust of the people, who have accepted the appeasement policy and have lost their vote bank, have come together to save their survival.
bmc elections
The Maharashtra State Election Commission has announced elections for 29 municipal corporations across the state, including Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). Voting will take place on January 15 and counting will take place on January 16.
Although no official announcement was made about the seat sharing – reportedly Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) will contest 150 seats, while Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) will field its candidates on the remaining 77 seats. There are 227 seats in BMC.
