A person can survive with one kidney – however, there are certain factors that must be taken into consideration. Find out from a urologist here.
The kidney is a vital organ that helps remove toxins from the blood. It helps regulate urine output and blood pressure. It also helps balance salts and electrolytes in the body and aids in the formation of red blood cells. But can a person survive with one kidney? In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Vikas Agarwal, Director, Kidney Transplant, Uro Oncology and HOD-Robotic Urology, Aakash Healthcare, New Delhi, said, “Kidney donation is the most in demand among all organs. A living donor can donate a kidney to someone and it can work well for the rest of his life. A person can live a normal healthy life with one kidney. Generally, while some people prefer to donate their organs such as kidneys after death, however, you can do it while you are alive as well.”

What is a living kidney transplant?
A living kidney transplant is when a kidney is removed from a healthy donor and transplanted into a recipient. Most people living with one kidney — whether from birth or after a kidney transplant — are able to live long and healthy lives.

Factors to keep in mind:
“The only factor that really matters is whether the patient has diabetes or hypertension, or is taking any painkillers or has any other toxic injury to the kidney that can damage his kidneys which can impair his life. Otherwise, a person can do whatever he wants with one kidney or both kidneys and there is no difference in the life and survival of the patient. However, it is important to follow a healthy lifestyle and get regular medical checkups to monitor the health of the kidneys,” explained Dr Vikash Agarwal. The urologist urged people to participate in kidney donation, as kidney transplantation can save about 150,000 lives in India.
