But just think, if you are sitting in a cab and the driver refuses to drive like this, then what will be your condition. In fact, the cab drivers union in Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, has decided not to turn on the AC in this summer season. This includes drivers of online taxi platforms like Ola, Uber and Rapido.
The union says that keeping the AC on reduces the mileage of the car and increases the running cost. Due to this, the driver has to face huge losses in summer. In such a situation, some cab drivers drive the car without turning on the AC so that they can save money. This causes problems to customers booking cabs.
Taxi drivers troubled by low savings
According to a report in Dainik Bhaskar, cab driver Murali Reddy said that the cost of driving a cab on AC is Rs 16-18/km. Uber, Ola and Rapid take commission, after which they get only Rs 10/km. Reddy said that even after working for 16 hours, only Rs 500 to Rs 800 can be saved. The maintenance cost of the car also goes into this. He has demanded from the companies (Ola, Uber and Rapido etc.) to increase the fare of AC cabs. Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) had announced the ‘No AC’ campaign on 8 April.
Announcing the move on Twitter, the taxi union wrote, “@TGPWU is launching a ‘No AC’ campaign. We drivers working with Uber, Ola and Rapido apps are unable to turn on AC in the cab due to fall in per kilometer fare. “The cost of running our cabs with AC is Rs 16-18 per kilometre.”
Difficulties for passengers will increase in summer
Let us tell you that Hyderabad is one of those cities where the mercury remains highest during summer. In summer the temperature here crosses 43 degrees. In such a situation, the decision of taxi drivers not to use AC can cause problems for thousands of customers. However, taxi drivers say that they will switch on the AC only on the condition of receiving a tip from the customer.
