Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday intensified his allegations against Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi, stating that Gogoi and his wife maintain close ties with the establishment of Pakistan. CM Sarma said, “I have documents to prove his wife’s participation in collecting Indian intelligence input. I will reveal the details on 10 September.”
For this, in his first public statement on the matter, Gaurav Gogoi clarified that his wife spent only one year in Pakistan in 2013, while working on an international project focused on climate change in South Asia.
‘Very serious allegations’
Himanta Biswa Sarma accused Congress MP Gogoi and his wife of “getting deep involved in anti-India activities” and highlighted that Gogoi’s son, born in India, later acquired British citizenship after surrendering his Indian passport, called these “very serious allegations”.
Assam CM Sarma also claimed that Gaurav Gogoi’s visit to Pakistan was made convenient by the Home Department of Pakistan, not its external matters or cultural ministries, prepared it as a serious national concern.
‘C-grade Bollywood movie’
Responding to these allegations, Gaurav Gogoi denied any wrongdoing. At a press conference in New Delhi, he said, “About 14–15 years ago, my wife, who is a famous expert in public policy, worked on an international project in South Asia, focused on climate change. She spent a year with some time in Pakistan before returning to India around 2012-13. I am also going around 2013.”
“Since then, he has continued his work and took a new job in 2015. I also remember that he is going with him once in 2013. He (BJP) is defamation and by underlining the issue, he is making this whole thing like a C-grade Bollywood film, which he has said that he will be released on 10 September.
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi dismissed the claims of the BJP leader as “ridiculous, baseless and nonsense”, described the controversy as “a C-Grade Bollywood film” scripted by the BJP.
Gogoi questioned why the central government had not acted in the last 11 years if there was any misconduct and accused Himant Sarma that it was trying to sow doubts within the Congress leadership.
Gogoi accused Sarma of a pattern of deception, which mentioned the allegations such as the allegations that Rahul Gandhi used “body double” during the Bharat Joda Nai Yatra. He said, “I am the son of Tarun Gogoi. I will not be intimidated. The truth will be strong,” he confirmed, demanded two seating – to examine one and to examine another sarma.
‘Finally, Gaurav Gogoi has accepted’
Reacting to Gogoi’s comments, Chief Minister Himanta Sarma welcomed the “entry” of the Congress MP and claimed that reliable evidence supports Gogoi’s allegations with Pakistani establishments.
Sarma wrote on X, “Finally, Congress MP Mr. Gaurav Gogoi has admitted that he visited Pakistan. But we should be very clear – this is just the beginning, not the end.”
He said, “The lie that further lies is more serious. Every proper basis supported by reliable input and documented information is present, suggesting that Mr. Gogoi has maintained closeness with the Pakistani establishment,” he claimed.
Gogoi Place ‘Counter-Plan’
In the press conference in Congress 24, Akbar Road Office, Gogoi raised questions about the time and intentions behind the allegations.
“Our copy is: If, according to these allegations, my wife or I have done any wrongdoing or illegal work, then who has been in power for the last 11-12 years? The central agencies have been doing what at this time?
