The Congress party on Monday released its first list of 70 candidates for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections to be held on January 15. This list has come just a day before the end of the deadline for filing nominations.
The list came a day after the national party sealed the seat pact with former MP Prakash Ambedkar-led VBA for elections to the 227-member BMC – India’s largest and richest civic body, with an annual budget of more than Rs. 74,000 crores.
VBA is contesting 62 seats in alliance with Congress.
Former Maharashtra minister Mahadev Jankar’s Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP), which is contesting the BMC elections in alliance with the Congress, also announced its first list of six candidates.
When are BMC elections?
Elections for 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Nagpur, will be held on January 15 and counting of votes will take place the next day. The last date for filing nomination is 30 December.
BJP and Shiv Sena will contest the BMC elections as part of the ruling alliance – Mahayuti. Under the agreed seat-sharing formula, the BJP will contest on 128 seats, while the Shiv Sena will field its candidates on 79 seats, and the distribution of the remaining seats will be decided on the basis of candidates and local equations.

The BJP released its first list of 66 candidates for the 227-member municipal body. The list includes a mix of new candidates, female contenders and a limited number of experienced leaders.
The timely announcement of candidates by the Congress Party reflects its strategic alliance aimed at maximizing electoral success.
The Nationalist Congress Party (SP) led by former Union Minister Sharad Pawar announced its candidates for seven seats. The constituent party of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has not formed an alliance with any other political party in Mumbai.
