Congress party chief Mallikrajun Kharge attacked the Central Government on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra-Mode-Left Central Government, after the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 by Parliament, Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Rajya Sabha, Kharge accused the government of taking “negative stands”.
Kharge told reporters after passing the bill at midnight on Thursday, “This is their interpretation, we have given their views on the bill in front of them (government). They have taken a negative stand and they are taking it forward.”
In the Rajya Sabha, the bill received 128 votes in its favor and all the amendments made by the opposition against 95 were rejected. In the Lok Sabha, the bill was supported by 288 MPs while 232 voted against it.
Opposition leaders in Parliament said that the Waqf Amendment Bill violated the constitutional principles and questioned the government’s intention in bringing it into the law.
Division politics will harm Nation: Sibal
Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said that ‘the politics of division will harm the nation’.
“125 to 92 on the amendment and 128 to 95 for the passage of the bill. They both have a majority. Adequate numbers have opposed the bill. It will have political implications, especially for political parties who support the BJP because there are elections in Bihar … Division politics will harm the country.”
RJD leader Manoj Kumar Jha said that there is dissatisfaction in people’s minds. “In this Parliament, only farm laws were passed and the opposition made a very meaningful contribution … people still have dissatisfaction and if it has not been cleaned, the result should not be like farm laws,” Jha told reporters.
Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the opposition parties of trying to mislead people on the Waqf Amendment Bill and said that it would benefit crores of people of the Muslim community.
Responding to a long debate over the bill over the bill in the Rajya Sabha, Rijiju said that several suggestions made by the Joint Parliamentary Committee were included in the revised bill. Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “They have misused the majority and the bill has been imposed. If the bill is challenged, there is a big opportunity that the judiciary will declare it unconstitutional.”
TMC MP Sagarika Ghosh said that it is a tragic day for the Republic of India that today, like the Waqf Amendment Bill, an openly constitutional bill has been passed.
“The bill fundamentally eradicates personal freedom to practice religion … It is a sad day that this unconstitutional bill has been bulldozer in Parliament by the BJP,” Ghosh said.
The government introduced the revised bill after the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) recommendations were included, which had investigated the law introduced in August last year. Bill wants to amend the Act of 1995 and improve the administration and management of Waqf properties in India.
The aim of the bill is to remove the shortcomings of the previous Act and increase the efficiency of Waqf boards, improve registration process and increase the role of technology in managing Waqf records.
Congress MP Ranjit Ranjan said that it is “unfortunate” that the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 has been passed. Another Congress MP Rajiv Shukla said that the bill has been passed as there was a number in the ruling party.
“The bill has been passed because the ruling party had a number but the opposition also expressed its views and the bill was discussed,” Shukla said.
“Black Day” for democracy
DMK MP MM Abdullah said it is a “black day” for democracy and for minorities. Abdullah said, “We have shown our solidarity and our strength. The Chief Minister (MK Stalin) has already announced that he will take it to court.”
SP MP Ramji Lal Suman said, “The bill has been passed because the government had the number … his intention is not correct …”
The Parliament passed the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 in the early hours of Friday after a marathon and hot debate. Rajya Sabha president Jagdeep Dhikar said, “Ayes 128 and Noes 95, absent zero. The bill has been passed.” The Muslim Waqf (Relations) Bill, 2024 ‘has also been passed in Parliament. The House sat beyond midnight to pass the law.

Tricks to improve vote bank: Hussain
Earlier, during the debate in Rajya Sabha Congress leader Naseer Hussain, the BJP -led Central Government accused the central government of using the Waqf bill to improve his vote bank after being reduced in 240 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
