New Delhi. The government has taken a big step to strengthen cyber security in the telecom sector. Under the new rules, mobile operators will be responsible for sharing users’ traffic data (except message content) with the central government. Apart from this, companies will have to inform the government within six hours of any cyber security breach.
The government has directed companies selling mobile phones to mandatorily register the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) of all devices manufactured or imported into India. This step has been taken to stop fake devices and illegal activities.
Government’s eye on traffic data
According to the new rules, the central government or any agency authorized by it can ask for traffic data and other information from telecom companies to ensure telecom cyber security. However, the content of the messages will not be included. The government will analyze this data and share it with law enforcement and security agencies.
Provision of data storage for cyber security
Under the new law, telecom companies will have to install necessary infrastructure and equipment so that data can be stored and kept secure. Apart from this, the government will also create a database of such people and telecom identifiers who have been processed under the orders. Such persons may be banned from accessing telecom services for three years.
Appointment of cyber security officer is mandatory
Every telecom company will have to appoint a Chief Telecom Security Officer (CTSO), information about which will be given to the government in writing. According to the rules, if a cyber security incident occurs on any telecom network or service, the telecom company will have to inform the central government within six hours. For this, a digital portal will be set up, where reports of such incidents can be filed.
The government has clarified that the purpose of the new rules is to improve telecom cyber security. The data will be used only to ensure security and while sharing it with telecom companies or users it will be ensured that it is not misused.
