A flood warning was issued in West Bengal after the lock of Bhutan’s lock hydroelectric dam due to technical failure on Sunday. The incident occurred when 14 people died in several landslides due to continuous heavy rains in Mirik and Darjeeling hills in West Bengal.
According to the news agency YearThe National Center for Hydrology and Meteorological (NCHM), Bhutan confirmed that Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) reported a malfunction in the dam’s gates, which failed to open, resulting in the river water spread over the structure.
Bhutan has formally alerted the West Bengal government to prepare for possible impacts.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) stated that its team located in Alipurduar is placed on the “highest alert level”.
All personnel on holiday have been remembered, while in addition to RRC Siliguri, 15 rescue teams are being deployed to strengthen the land response.
According to the meteorological approach, a storm system arising in eastern Uttar Pradesh has moved towards the east and is now coming near the motherhat in Duers.
If there is heavy rains in the hills of Bhutan, rivers in North Bengal are expected to be swollen rapidly, which increases the risk of flash floods.
Nchm said its flood warning group would continue to coordinate with DGPC to monitor the situation.
District administrations in North Bengal are advised to maintain maximum readiness, especially in river and lower level areas. Officers have also been urged to coordinate with Bhutanese officials for updated hydrological data to reduce potential effects.
NDRF deploys several teams
Meanwhile, NDRF has deployed several teams in the rain-pated Mirik region of Darjeeling subdivision in West Bengal, as torrential rains have triggered landslides on a large scale.
At least seven people were killed, and several villages were cut off from the rest of the region.
NDRF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mohsin Shahedi told ANI that three teams have already been collected from Darjeeling, Siliguri and Alipurduar, while two more teams, which are one of each from Malda and Kolkata, are routes to affected sites.
“Our personnel are engaged in intense rescue and relief operations to detect missing persons and help the trapped villagers,” Shahedi told ANI.
Since last night, continuous heavy rains have caused massive destruction in some parts of Darjeeling district, especially in Mirik and Sukhia Pokhari areas, where roads and houses have been washed.
