Bengaluru: Indian astronaut and skywalker Subhanshu Shukla on Tuesday called upon students to achieve their ambition of setting up a space station and landing on the moon.

Curious to see whether it will be a man or a woman from the country who steps on the lunar surface, the Group Captain of the Indian Air Force said that aspiring astronauts will have to compete with them.
“India is on its way to execute human space missions and the latest space vision was the policy that was brought in 2023. It clearly states that the country will execute Mission Gaganyaan, which is sending some humans to space, will bring them back,” the Indian Air Force test pilot, part of the Gaganyaan mission, said during his interaction with the students.
Gaganyaan is the country’s first human space flight programme.
“We will also have our own space station, the Indian space station, which is being built right now. There are discussions going on, and then ultimately an Indian landing on the Moon by 2040,” Shukla said.
He told the gathering, “I’m sure maybe one of you knows who walks on the moon, him or her? But I’m still here. I’m not going, so you’ll have to compete with me. You know, to go to the moon, we’ll be in competition.”
Explaining that it was an exciting time to be in India, he said, “We are launching from our own soil on our own launch vehicle, in our own capsule, and an Indian will go to space and come back. I think it’s a wonderful time to be in this country.”
Saying that India’s future is “really bright”, he said he is happy and excited to see the kind of enthusiasm being generated about the space sector in the country.
Shukla assured that he will always be available to be involved in all future projects and said that this was one of the mandate and work.
The astronaut said that under ‘Developed India’ the target is to see India as a developed nation by 2047 and this target will be achieved automatically.
In this regard, he called upon the student community to be an active participant and think that they as individuals will make India a developed India from here on out in 2047 “because this will be your time, not ours”.
