Asthma safety tips and ways to keep symptoms at bay

It is that time of the year again when we enjoy the last wonders of winter with our children as much as possible, but sometimes are not able to do so due to runny nose, bad cough and breathing problems amid the weather change. Many children are sensitive to the winter season and allergy symptoms become worse, so respiratory problems are not uncommon during this period.

This is especially relevant for children suffering from asthma. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Vishrut Joshi, consultant pediatric intensivist (ICU specialist for children) at Ankura Hospital for Women and Children in Pune, shared, “The winter air, being cold and dry, makes asthma sufferers Irritates the airways of children. “This causes them to spasm and become narrow, resulting in cough and difficulty breathing.”

Dr Vishrut Joshi said, “The good news is that there are some precautions we can take to make this period smooth and pleasant. These include limiting outdoor exertion, especially in the cool morning hours. Try and choose the warmer hours of the day with appropriate clothing to enjoy the outdoors! Some of us use heating systems to stay warm during these months. In addition to making the air dry, these heating systems can also contain dust and mold spores from being unused most of the year.”

“A thorough cleaning and filter change is essential before using them,” he advised. Additionally, for troublesome dry air, a humidifier can be used to make hot air moist and soothing. Avoiding smoke, regular vacuum cleaning, and washing bedding and curtains in hot water are other essential steps to keep dust and mold under control. Sensitive airways are also at risk for respiratory infections, so staying up to date on vaccinations, including flu and COVID vaccines as per age, are highly recommended steps! Hand hygiene and use of face masks are extremely important to prevent seasonal viral respiratory infections. It is essential to avoid contact with people with active respiratory infections.”

Dr Vishrut Joshi recommends, “A healthy diet and adequate hydration are equally important along with preventive measures to deal with the possibility of exacerbation of asthma symptoms. Last but not least, keep in regular contact with your pediatrician, educate yourself about early warning symptoms, get an asthma action plan for your child, and travel with children if you can to get the most benefit. If you are planning to do so, be aware of nearby medical facilities. Last of winter!
