On Monday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that his government will serve only vegetarian and satvik food at official meetings. The decision is part of a broader initiative to end VIP culture and reduce the number of vehicles and barricades associated with the chief minister’s security.
“Our government is committed to ending the VIP culture. We are reducing the number of vehicles and barricades involved in the chief minister’s security. Going forward, only vegetarian and sattvic food will be served at all government functions,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced at a two-day district commissioners’ conference in Guwahati.

Notably, the new directive on vegetarian food came after the Chief Minister reprimanded the Nalbari District Commissioner for ignoring the instructions to serve simple vegetarian food instead of serving sumptuous food in the cabinet meeting. Chief Minister Sarma had earlier written a formal letter to Nalbari District Commissioner Varnali Deka expressing his displeasure over not following the directive.
Assam Chief Minister’s new order: Do not spend unnecessarily for government work
On Christmas Day, he stressed to the District Commissioners that there should not be unnecessary wasteful expenditure in government functions.
We need to do away with old VIP protocols, says Assam CM
He said the state government would adopt public-friendly behaviour by abolishing the existing VIP protocol and only simple vegetarian food would be served in official meetings, though this would not apply to state guests.
He said, “My instructions to all officials are clear – avoid unnecessary extravagance in government functions. We have to do away with old VIP protocols and bring our governance in line with public expectations. Simple vegetarian food should be served in all official meetings, with exceptions made for state guests.”
