After Rahul Gandhi called Himanta Biswa Sarma the ‘most corrupt Chief Minister’, he hit back at the Congress leader, saying, ‘The most corrupt family in the country – Gandhi family of Congress.’
Soon after the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ entered Assam, Gandhi on Thursday remarked that perhaps India’s “most corrupt government” was operating in the state.
“Today BJP and your Chief Minister (Himanta Biswa Sarma) are dividing Assam. Perhaps, the most corrupt Chief Minister in the country is the Chief Minister of Assam.”
“You know what’s happening here. We will raise the issues of Assam during the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’, he told party workers.
Later, the Assam CM reacted to the comments, saying, “The Gandhi family is the most corrupt family in the country. This is not ‘Nyay Yatra’, it is ‘Miya Yatra’. Wherever there are Muslims, they go to those places,” Sarma was quoted as saying by PTI.
The Miyans refer to Muslims who migrated to Assam from what is now Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan), in successive waves over time.”
Congress’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ led by Rahul Gandhi entered Assam from Nagaland via Helowating in Sivasagar district.
Resuming the journey from Tuli in Nagaland, Gandhi reached Assam at 9:45 am, where he was welcomed by hundreds of party workers. In hellowetting, the national flag was handed over to Assam Congress leaders for the 8-day leg of the state visit.
The march proceeded from Hellowetting through Amguri town to Jorhat, with large numbers of people standing on the road to welcome Gandhiji. At various stops, he interacted with the crowd including at Amguri Bazaar and was later given a warm welcome at Mariani, Jorhat.
The nationwide yatra led by the Congress MP covers a distance of 6,713 kilometers through 110 districts in 15 states in 67 days, culminating in Mumbai on March 20. The Assam phase will continue till January 25.
