Is Artificial Intelligence the reason why scientists have not found any evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations? Scientists believe that the development of AI on Earth should be related to the decreasing probability of finding evidence of any alien civilization.
Scientists who observe the Fermi Paradox have stated that the contradiction between the high probability of the existence of alien life and the complete lack of evidence of it may be linked to AI development among humans on Earth.
According to a report published by Michael Garrett, it has been suggested that the development of AI into Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) could be the ‘great filter’ keeping out foreign evidence.
The Great Filter Theory states that intelligent life must overcome a barrier to become advanced and interstellar. This principle also applies to natural disasters and self-inflicted destruction.
Garrett argues that artificial superintelligence development could be a tipping point for civilizations, potentially threatening extinction within 200 years if left unchecked. This time frame may explain the lack of any detectable signal of past ETI.
Garrett’s study also highlights the urgency of developing rules for AI development and pursuing a multi-planetary future to mitigate these existential threats.
Beyond immediate job displacement concerns, the ethical and societal implications of advanced AI are vast. Issues such as algorithmic bias, social manipulation, and the ability of AI to make autonomous decisions raise many unanswered questions.
Stephen Hawking has already warned that AI will surpass human intelligence and potentially replace humanity entirely. This scenario is consistent with the concept of ASI, a super-intelligent AI that surpasses human capabilities.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida signed a deal with Amazon.com Inc. to finance a new joint artificial intelligence research program. And Nvidia Corp. Listed as both countries look to improve cooperation around rapidly emerging technology, reports Bloomberg.
