Being overweight leaves permanent memories on fat cells, making it easy for some people to regain lost weight in a few days.
Are you tired of losing weight and seeing it come back after some time? Well, before you start beating yourself up, it’s time to find out what could be causing fat cells’ long memory. A recent study led by Professor Ferdinand von Mayen of ETH Zurich explained the yo-yo effect, a phenomenon where lost body fat returns.

Why does this happen?
Epigenetics are tiny chemical markers in the body that act as switches to turn genes on or off. When we are overweight, it leaves a lasting effect on these chemical markers, making it easier for the body to regain the lost kilos even after dieting.

Study findings:
The study was conducted on overweight rats and rats that had recently lost weight. It was observed that obesity can have lasting effects on chemical markers. Therefore, when these mice were provided with a fat-rich diet, they regained their weight much faster than mice without cellular memory.
The team also analyzed fat tissue samples from people who were overweight before undergoing fat-loss surgery. The findings match those in mice, showing that human fat cells also remember their previous size.

How to combat this phenomenon?
While scientists are still analyzing ways to erase memories, the study author suggested prevention is the key. Professor Ferdinand von Meyen, who led the study, said: “Fat cells remember the overweight state and can more easily return to this state. It is precisely because of this memory effect that it is so important to avoid being overweight in the first place. Because it’s the easiest way to deal with the yo-yo phenomenon.”

Currently, the team is studying whether the brain and blood vessels also contain similar memory markers. If so, this may help explain why weight loss is extremely challenging for some people.
