In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Sameer Garde, director, department of pulmonology and lung transplant at Gleneagles Hospital in Parel, Mumbai, explained, “Viral pneumonia is a type of lung infection in which your lungs become inflamed. Microorganisms such as viruses are the main culprits. Common viruses such as influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and coronavirus can contribute to the initial onset of viral pneumonia. It usually clears up on its own, while bacterial pneumonia requires certain antibiotics and medications to treat it.”
The symptoms associated with viral pneumonia are often overlooked because they are similar to those of a cold or flu. “These include symptoms such as dry cough, fever, chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, headache, muscle pain, fatigue, and excessive sweating. These symptoms can turn into severe respiratory problems and negatively impact quality of life,” explained Dr. Sameer Garde.

Talking about who is at risk, Dr. Sameer Garde said, “People with long-term health conditions, weakened immune systems, smoking and advancing age are at a higher risk of developing viral pneumonia. Getting vaccinated for viral pneumonia can help prevent this disease while ensuring your safety. One should consult their doctor to discuss their concerns about getting vaccinated for this disease.”
He highlighted vaccines for viral pneumonia –
1. Conjugated pneumococcal vaccine (PCV):
This vaccine is used to combat pneumococcal diseases such as pneumonia, ear infections, and meningitis. It is mostly recommended for children, but may also be prescribed to adults at high risk of developing viral pneumonia. This vaccine helps the immune system fight pneumococcal bacteria effectively, while reducing the intensity of symptoms experienced. Generally, babies receive four shots of this vaccine in the first two years after their birth. However, adults with underlying health conditions and people aged 65 and above are advised to get a single dose of the PCV vaccine.
2. Polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine (PPSV):
Unlike the conjugate pneumococcal vaccine (PCV), the PPSV vaccine is made from the polysaccharides (sugars) of pneumococcal bacteria. It is primarily recommended for the age group of 65 years and above. People with existing health conditions like kidney diseases, asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), diabetes and a weakened immune system can get vaccinated with PPSV. It is generally safe and has minor side effects like redness, swelling and pain in the injected area. The PPSV vaccine is generally not recommended for infants or children. It stimulates the immune system to actively produce antibodies to fight this deadly virus. The effectiveness of this vaccine may vary from person to person depending on the widespread prevalence of specific strains of pneumococcal bacteria in the body.
3. Influenza vaccine:
This vaccine is initially used to prevent influenza, a type of viral infection that can also cause pneumonia. High-risk groups such as pregnant women, children 6 months to 8 years of age, adults 65 years and older, and people with underlying health problems are encouraged to get vaccinated to reduce their chances of developing viral pneumonia.
