Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday that New Delhi has come to know that more Indian service in the Russian army and new information is being received from their families.
Jaiswal said in his weekly press conference, “According to our information, 27 Indian citizens are currently serving in the Russian Army. We are also in constant touch with their families in this matter.” He said, “We once again urge all Indian citizens to stay away from the proposals received to serve in the Russian Army as they are full of dangers and risks.”
Jaiswal said that India has raised this matter strongly before Russian officials. He said, “We have raised the matter vigorously in front of Russian officials in Moscow and the Russian Embassy in New Delhi and requested them (Indians) to free service as soon as possible.” He said, “We are trying to get them out (from there).”
There have been reports that students and some Indians on business visas have been forcibly recruited in Russian military units posted on the war front in Ukraine. India has repeatedly requested Russia to free all Indians working as assistant personnel like cook and helper in Russian military units.
During his visit to Russia last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also raised this issue. According to official data, the number of Indians admitted to the Russian army is now more than 150. At least 12 Indians were killed while fighting on the advance front of the conflict in Ukraine, while 96 were freed by Russian officials. The other 16 has been declared missing.
