on technology and films

In Vikramaditya Motwane-directed CTRL, where a story unfolds entirely through different screens, Ananya plays Naila, a social media influencer whose life is ruined when she falls in love with her cheating ex (Vihaan Samat). It takes the help of AI to erase it from its digital. life.

The actor said that the timing of the releases of his three projects, where the digital lives of his characters play an important role in the narrative, made it seem like there was a connection between them but he did not think about it while signing them.

“I think this is the time we live in. This is the generation we live in where technology is such a big part of all of our lives. Being part of Gen Z, these stories are relevant to me. This is something that is just beginning to happen.

“In the romantic genre or thriller genre, it (technology) will be a prevalent character. I feel like it’s something that exists. It would be hard to tell a story that doesn’t have some influence or some social media. This will happen in many more stories going forward,” he told PTI in an interview.

Dangers of Hyper-Connectivity

When asked if working on CTRL made her aware of the dangers of hyper-connectivity, Ananya said that some habits are difficult to give up. However, the film has made them more aware of their online activity.

“Even in small things, like agreeing to terms and conditions, allowing your iPad and your laptop access to your camera and microphone, cookies every time you visit a new website. Accepting…we don’t know the consequences. The movie made me aware of those little things, but it still comes back to the same toxic behavior. I know that, but I’m still doing it,” she admitted.

Ananya, who is the daughter of actor Chunky Pandey and entrepreneur Bhavana Pandey, said her first social media account was on Facebook, which she created secretly. “My mom found out and got really angry at me. He deactivated my Facebook account for a few years. I could only get it when I was of legal age,” she recalled.

Keys to Using Social Media

CTRL starts streaming on Netflix from October 4 and Ananya has used her Instagram account, where she has over 25 million followers, to promote the film. Earlier, his first web series Call Me Bay came on Prime Video. The key to staying on social media, he said, is not to take it “too seriously.”

“I had an Instagram account before I became an actor and at that time it was more private. I’ve always had a lot of fun with it. I’ve kind of maintained the same thing. I keep it as real as possible. I post whatever I want. I don’t take it very seriously. That’s the key but my relationship with social media also keeps changing.

“As I’m promoting now, I’m posting a lot because obviously I want people to see the movie, but I think I’m going to take a much-needed digital detox because it’s so bad for your mental health. Affects.”

The 25-year-old said she can partially relate to her CTRL character when it comes to “just her life being so public and people having opinions and things on her life”.

“But the part that I had to dig a little deeper into was her family life because she comes from Delhi and her parents run a bakery and they always wanted her to work there, but she always wanted to do more for herself. Used to watch a lot… Also, figuring out all the impressive things… Being an actor, I find all the reel making and things very difficult. It is a worthy cause.”

Facing social media trolling

Ananya, who made her film debut with Student of the Year 2 in 2019, has faced a lot of social media trolling and though she doesn’t want to talk about it “specifically”, she attributes it to her growth. Considered a part of.

“…Even like those films that didn’t do as well as we had hoped, all those things have made me the person and actor I am today. So I’m grateful for everything. I wouldn’t change my journey for anything,” she added.

Ananya described Shakun Batra’s ‘Gahraiyan’ as the turning point of her career. She was praised for her acting in the 2022 film, which also starred Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Dhairya Karva.

“Now, I constantly feel like, ‘Oh, I’m different than before.’ And the growth in our industry is happening very fast,” he said, crediting the film for bringing him Ctrl as Vikramaditya offered him the project after watching Dahiyaan.

“For me, these are dream directors and I would love to work with them. Probably there has been a change in his mind… I have always been open and willing to work with these directors. The opportunities I am getting now are much more rewarding and satisfying as an actor.

Ananya’s wish list

Ananya has a long list of directors she wants to work with. The genres she would like to try next include a romantic film, a horror film and a biopic. “I got a chance to work with Zoya (Akhtar), even though she didn’t direct Kho Gaye Hum Kahaan, she wrote and produced the (Netflix) film. I would love to be involved in something he directs.

“I got a chance to do a song for Karan (Johar) in Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, but I would love to be his heroine in a proper film. I would love to work with Sanjay (Leela Bhansali). He’s like an all-time favorite. There is a long, long list. I am just naming a few.”
